The Homoviral Hypothesis (2009)
Program Note
with digitally processed trombone
sounds*, electronic sounds, Nintendo video game sounds, racing car sounds,
and a variety of strange noises
The trombone music is an obvious reference to the Sequenza V for Trombone Solo by the 20th century Italian composer Luciano Berio. In his fanciful and unsettling piece for solo trombone, Berio explores the psyche of the human male.** I am upgrading the musical inquiry into the nature of the contemporary male to include anxieties provoked by increasing techno-culture. The sounds are mixed somewhat arbitrarily, but with careful attention to ‘anthropological’ detail.
* freely improvised by Scott Hadley
** It was Grock, a famous European clown, who inspired Berio to compose this piece.
