Thoreau's Ghost (2005)
(the music consists of sounds of weather, pond,
insects, and birds, along with digitally modified flute sounds)
There are seven recorded tracks, two each of weather, pond,
insects, and birds, plus the flute music. The flute music is digitally
modified. The mix also includes
footsteps of 'Thoreau's ghost' as he walks about Walden Pond.
Each track was separated into short segments, naturally bounded by
silences. Within each track, the segments were then recombined,
independently of one another, and separated by varied durations of silence.
The duration of each silence was mirrored by the segment's musical
duration, except for the flute music, in which the silences were inversely
mirrored.
During his stay at Walden, Thoreau often found time to play
his flute.
